CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS - Substantiation Issues
Yes, the IRS isn’t making anything easy for us - even for our charitable contributions. But, we have to play by the rules.
You must have written proof (cancelled check, bank statement, credit card statement, or receipt) for any cash donations - even down to $1. Your own personal note doesn’t count anymore.
When making donations in excess of $250, you are required not only to keep written proof listed above but also to obtain written acknowledgement from the charitable organization.
